About the HMS Sovereign

HMS Sovereign Of The Seas - At the time of her construction, The Sovereign Of The Seas was considered to be a masterpiece. With a keel length of 127 Feet, a height of 75 feet, and an overall length of 215 feet, she was far and away the largest and most powerful ship in the world. Charles I of England gave the order to build her in 1634. Her completion required the labors of over a thousand craftsmen for three years. In 1637, she sailed with a crew of 800 men, and her 104 guns could fire a broadside of almost two tons of metal. In her first naval engagement in 1652, The Sovereign Of The Seas sank a Dutch Warship with a single broadside. For 60 years she ruled the seas Unmatched.

Testimonial From Our Customers (View All)
Dear Wonderful Friends at JMX!
Thank you, thank you, thank you!! My husband, Fred and I received our new Amish dining table and chairs last evening. We have never seen such beautiful workmanship as that from the Amish Community. Their fine reputation for quality has always been perfection! They are true artisans!
We are completely awed with the fine wood work and precision that went in to the crafting of these beautiful pieces!
There is no doubt we found the very best in the JMX Corporation and all of you, who care so much about your products, how they are crafted and manufactured, and ultimately providing such personal care in the process. We truly appreciate all of the time you each spent processing our order to insure that all was exactly right! That's the ultimate in Customer Service! We applaud you! It is rare to find such wonderful people who are in the business of true customer satisfaction. You all have exceeded our expectations, and we could not be happier.
We also need to mention how we appreciate the outstanding efforts and personal attention from Mr. Gary Blevins, the gentleman who delivered our furniture and handled it with all the "tender loving care" one could ever expect! He called us numerous times as he made his way through the upper north west as he headed toward our home in Surprise, AZ. He arrived around 8:30 p.m., and unloaded and handled the furniture pieces meticulously! He was pleasant, though obviously somewhat fatigued, but had promised delivery on February 2nd, and there he was! What a guy!
Again, we are so grateful to you all and to Gary Blevins for all that you do!
We truly appreciate all of your combined efforts in making our purchase a very special, and satisfying experience!
We wish you all our sincere gratitude and continued success!

Model Ship History

The art of ship modeling has existed since ancient Egypt, where they were used in burials and believed to carry the soul into the afterlife. Some of the oldest ship models found, date from the 12th century and have occasionally been found mounted in churches, where they were used to bless the ships and those who sailed on them. Through the earlier centuries, and even into the 18th century, virtually all small craft and many of the larger ships were built without any formal plans being drawn. Shipwrights were apprenticed to their craft at an early age and the art was passed down from father to son.

During the several wars between France and England, seamen who were taken prisoner sought relief from boredom by building ship models from scraps of wood and bone. This evolved into an art form and the models were sold to the public. For the most part, the models had carved wooden hulls covered with thin veneers of bone or ivory, and other parts of the model such as masts and spars were also carved from bone and ivory. To this day they remain highly sought after, valuable collectibles.

Ship modeling got off to a rather slow start in the United States. Many of the older models from the turn of the century, 1900 on, were models built by seamen who spent their off-duty hours whittling models of ships they were serving on.

Today there exists national and international sources of ship's plans, dimensions, construction techniques, types of wood and other materials to use in the building of models. There are numerous books and periodicals devoted to the craft.

Our model ships are built 'plank on frame'. In this technique, the model is built just as the full size wooden ship is constructed. The keel is laid down in a manner which keeps it straight and true. The sternpost and stem are erected, deadwood and strengthening pieces inserted, and a series of shaped frames are built and erected along the keel to form the internal framework of the model. The planks are then applied over the frame to form the external covering. Our model ships are also made from the actual blueprints for the original vessel.
